The main characteristic is that the practitioner keeps a good spirit to practice the internal and external three joins and combine them into one. The internal three joins mean: mind and heart, mind and breath, breath and force are joined together. The external three joins means that hands and feet, elbows and knees, shoulders and hips are joined together. Another outstanding characteristic is to keep the internal quiet and the external fierce, combine hardness with softness, simple and unadorned. The practitioner works on a straight line. This means that his movements of advancing, retreating, turning, sideways or jumping are restrained to one line. His arms are kept slightly bent, so that he can stretch out to attack or withdraw for self defence freely. He should know how to make feint strikes and when striking, hit the vital parts of the opponent. Hi movements should be as dexterous as a cat, his striking as lightning, using his hands like canonballs, shaking his body like a tiger, moving like a dragon and his yelling like thunder.
2. Shaolin skills
The movements of kicking, beating, tumbling and catching are required to be dexterous, quick, fierce and stable. The practitioner should know how to grasp the chance to attack the opponent. He should be able to free (uncatch) himself when catched. That is to say: Catching is having uncatching.
